Sales Manager
It might be hard to believe, but we have never had a sales manager, or even a salesman. We've always let the products speak for themselves and have never put much effort into marketing. But as our product selection grows and sales increase around the world, we need help. If you're a good sales manager you have an idea of what the the job entails and what the requirements are. And if you know our products you realize that this would be a great opportunity to work with unique products and expect users.
Designer
We would always consider hiring a designer that can meet our requirements. For a highly talented and skilled person, this would be the best job in the industry. But it will also be the hardest to get. Our products are at the high end of the market. They are unique functionally, aesthetically and in the way they are made. You must understand this and further it. Here are some other qualifications for a designer:
1) We use SolidWorks and you must be very good with this program. Just as there is a best design for a product, there is a best way to design products in a CAD system. The design method should intelligently minimize the number of featurers by using them to the fullest. Some designers start with a basic blob and make numerous minor features as the design evolves. This results in several times the number of features really needed and makes it harder to edit and hard to understand six months later when someone else needs to do something with your design. The sketches that underly the features must be done with machining in mind. For example, consider a pulley design. Most, or even all, of the profile can easily be created in a single sketch. This makes it very easy to program and to modify later if needed.
2) You must understand machining and production. If you don't know what CNC machining centers and turning centers are and do you cannot effectively design our kind of products. In most companies, the designers and the production department don't understand much about each other. So things get designed which cannot be manufacturered and new products go back and forth several times until finally something gets into production. At Rock Exotica, the design and production are integral and proceed synchronously. We even indulge in the very expensive luxury of prototyping on our production equipment. That way, the prototypes are perfect, the production method and tooling is determined and the programming is ready to go.
3) Experience and lots of it. Sorry, but there's no substitute for it. We know there are many newly minted engineers that climb and that want to work in the industry. We wish you luck and regret that we are not able to offer you employment. But come back once your resume will support your aspirations.
If you want to apply, we will ask you what your expertise in climbing or rescue or fall protection, etc. is. We don't expect you to know everything about all of our market segments, but you'll need to have an area of expertise. We'll want to see what products you've designed, whether in our industry or another. You must show us some designs in SolidWorks and we will look not only at your design, but the methodology you used to develop it and you should be prepared to explain it.
